Cardinals Downed By Ferris State, 111-65

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Bridget Horwitz scored 18 points and Lucy DeMartin also had 17 to lead Ferris State to a 111-65 victory over SVSU Thursday night (Jan. 23). The loss was the Cardinals’ seventh straight and drops their overall record to 4-13 (0-9 GLIAC) on the season, while the visiting Bulldogs improved to 10-6 (5-4 GLIAC).
Ferris held a commanding 48-31 halftime lead and never let the Cardinals draw any closer. Erin Miller recorded 16 points, Darcie Miller had 14, and Kari Searles added eleven as the Bulldogs used double-digit scoring from five different players. For the game the Bulldogs shot a blistering 53.6 percent hitting 45-of-84 shot attempts, including 6-of-10 from long range. The 45 field goals converted was the most ever by FSU and the most any opponent has ever made against SVSU.
SVSU sophomore Jennifer Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.) scored 16 points and gathered twelve boards, while freshman Elicia Kinner (Pellston, Mich.) added 16 points, draining 6-of-11 from the floor. Freshman Stephanie Hass (Harbor Springs, Mich./Harbor Light Christian HS) and sophomore Nicole Pfenninger (Bay City, Mich./Western HS) each scored eight points for SVSU.
The Cardinals, who shot 41.4 percent (24-58), had eight assists, 35 rebounds, five steals, and committed 25 turnovers. Ferris had 18 steals, 13 turnovers, 27 assists, and 45 rebounds. FSU’s decisive victory was aided by advantages in points off turnovers (36-4), bench points (52-18), and points in the paint (64-26).
The 111 points tied the highest point output given up by SVSU since Northern Michigan did it on January 9, 1993 and the first time FSU had ever scored over one hundred points in a road contest. The 46-point deficit was also the worst ever defeat for SVSU.
The Cardinals will host Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25) at 1:00 p.m. in the James E. O’Neill Arena.
