Cardinals Falter Against
Findlay, 73-60
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw
Valley State women's basketball team came close to picking up
its first GLIAC victory of the season, but ultimately fell to
the University of Findlay 73-60 Saturday (Jan. 4). The loss dropped
SVSU to 4-8 (0-4 GLIAC) on the season, while the visiting Oilers
improved to 5-11, (2-2 GLIAC).
Findlay had control of the game most of
the way, but SVSU’s full-court press and scrappy defense
allowed the Cardinals to narrow the lead to five points with under
five minutes to play (58-63). SVSU wasn’t able to pull any
closer the rest of the way and Findlay iced the game with free
throws down the stretch.
Senior Erin Johnson (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage HS) paced the Cardinals with 16 points, five
boards, and two steals. Sophomores Krista St. Aubin
(Stevenson, Mich./Utica HS), Jennifer Hagstrom
(Cadillac, Mich.), and Nicole Pfenninger
(Bay City, Mich./Western HS) added nine, nine, and eight
respectively.
Findlay, which shot nearly 50 percent
from the floor, was lead by Lydia Carpenter’s 19 points,
while Zsofia Horvath registered 15 points and seven rebounds for
the Oilers.
SVSU shot 40 percent from the field, sinking
23-of-58 shots. The Cardinals hit only three of seven three-point
field goal attempts, but made 11-of-16 free throws. SVSU did however
score 28 bench points and 14 second-chance points.
Meanwhile, Findlay converted 15-of-19
from the foul line, including six of their last six attempts.
They also used 22 points in the paint and 19 points off turnovers
for their second-straight GLIAC victory.
The Cardinals will battle Gannon Thursday
(Jan. 9) at 6:00 p.m. in Erie, Pa.
