SVSU Tips Off Season
By Topping Concordia 71-50
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State women's basketball
team opened the 2002-03 season with a 71-50 victory over Concordia
University Friday (November 22) in the first annual Farm Bureau
Insurance Classic.
The Cardinals opened up a 32-18
first half lead and cruised to the victory from there. SVSU sophomore
Jessica Wilson (Martin, Tenn./Westview HS) recorded
a team-high 12 points in 21 minutes of play, while freshman Stephanie
Hass (Harbor Springs, Mich./Harbor Light Christian)
added nine points to the Cardinal cause in only 14 minutes. Sophomore
Nicole Pfenninger (Bay City, Mich./Western HS) also
had a strong debut for the Cardinals, with eight points and two
rebounds in 17 minutes. Senior Erin Johnson (Saginaw,
Mich./Heritage HS) and sophomore Jennifer Hagstrom
(Cadillac, Mich.) topped the Cardinals with seven rebounds
each. Senior Angie Stewart (Perry, Mich.), freshman
Sara Bilunes (Holt, Mich.), and Johnson each added
four assists to aid the Cardinals on the offensive end.
Concordia was led by senior Carey
Musko, who recorded game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds.
Sophomore Amanda Head also reached double figures, totaling 10
points for Concordia. SVSU out shot CU 45.8% to 29.2%, while out
rebounding them by a 40-37 margin. Those numbers, combined with
23 Concordia turnovers, allowed SVSU to control the game from
the start. Head coach Kim Chandler played nine Cardinals for at
least 10 minutes each, allowing for a well-balanced attack and
a Cardinal victory.
In the first game of the Farm Bureau
Insurance Classic, the University of Missouri-St. Louis topped
Finlandia University 71-61. Sophia Ruffin, of U of M-St. Louis,
led all scorers with 23 points.
SVSU's record stands at 1-0, while
Concordia falls to 1-3 on the season. SVSU returns to the court
on Saturday (November 23) against the University of Missouri-St.
Louis at 6:00p.m in the final game of the Farm Bureau Insurance
Classic. Concordia will play Finlandia in the opening game Saturday,
set to tip off at 4:00p.m.
