Lady Cards Fall In Overtime
Thriller, 77-68
ATHENS, W. Va.. - The Saginaw Valley State
women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 77-68 overtime
decision to Concord College in a non-conference tilt Sunday afternoon
(Dec. 15). With the loss, the Cardinals slipped to 2-6 (0-3 GLIAC),
while the Mountain Lions improved to 3-3 (2-0 WVIAC).
SVSU had a chance to win the game, as
senior Erin Johnson (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) stepped
to the foul line with no time remaining in regulation and a one-point
deficit. She made good on her first attempt, but somehow the second
didn't go down, forcing overtime.
In the extra stanza, Concord took the
early lead and made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch sealing
the overtime victory. SVSU was outscored 15-6 in the extra session
and converted on only 2-of-9 from the field.
Junior Gretchen Klein (Colon,
Mich.) topped all Cardinal scorers with a career-high 15 points
and 14 rebounds, good for her first career double-double. Sophomore
Jennifer Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.) finished with
eleven points and seven rebounds, while freshman Stephanie
Hass (Harbor Springs, Mich./Harbor Light Christian HS)
added nine points for the Cardinals.
Concord's Jessica Walls led all scorers
with 23 points, draining eight of her 14 shots including 2-of-6
from three-point range. Renne Gagnier also had a strong performance
posting 16 points and eleven rebounds for the Lions.
The Cardinals held a 50-42 edge on the
boards and shot 37.5 percent from the field, compared to Concord's
35.7 percent. SVSU finished with a season-high 15 steals and committed
17 turnovers, three less than the Lions. Concord benefited from
a 20-12 assists margin and a 73.5 percent to 63.6 percent advantage
from the charity stripe.
The Cardinals will conclude their trip
in West Virginia Tuesday (Dec. 17) by taking on Bluefield State
College at 5:00 p.m.
