Eagles Fly Past SVSU,
82-62
CHARLESTON, W. Va.. - The Saginaw Valley
State women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 82-62 decision
to the University of Charleston in a non-conference tilt Saturday
afternoon (Dec. 14). SVSU had difficulties finding its shooting
touch all day, sinking just 22 of 61 field goals and hitting only
two of 17 from behind the three-point line. With the loss, the
Cardinals slipped to 2-5 (0-3 GLIAC), while Charleston improved
to 3-3.
Freshman Elicia Kinner (Pellston,
Mich.) scored ten points and junior Gretchen Klein (Colon,
Mich.) added ten, but the Cardinals could not overtake Charleston's
hot shooting, as the Golden Eagles bucketed 33 of 59 from the
field.
In addition to Kinner and Klein's 20 points,
Erin Johnson (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) (eight),
Stephanie Hass (Harbor Springs, Mich./Harbor Light Christian
HS) (nine) and Melissa Giancola (Eastlake, Ohio)
(seven) gave SVSU scoring options.
Jennifer Turner posted 16 points for Charleston,
draining six of her 13 shots including 4-of-9 from three-point
range. Lisa Lee and Sarah Batchelder also finished with 16 points
apiece for the Golden Eagles.
Charleston held a 42-31 edge on the boards,
and had a big advantage from the three-point line, converting
5 of 14, compared to SVSU's 2 of 17. SVSU sank 16-of-23 free throws
while U of C attempted eighteen, making eleven. SVSU had 12 turnovers
while the Golden Eagles, which shot 55.9 percent for the game,
had 14.
The Cardinals will continue their trip
in West Virginia by taking on Concord College tomorrow (Sunday,
Dec. 15) at 2:00 p.m.
