Cardinals Fall to
Eagles
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University
women’s basketball team fell to Ashland University Thursday
(December 5) by a count of 81-67. The Eagles held a commanding
39-20 half-time lead and never let the Cardinals get closer than
twelve points the rest of the way.
Junior Gretchen Klein
(Colon, Mich.) topped the Cardinals in points and rebounds
with career highs of 14 points and seven rebounds. Klein managed
her totals in 23 minutes of action and shot 7-11 from the floor.
Senior Erin Johnson (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage
HS) also had a strong showing with 13 points, while sophomore
Krista St. Aubin (Utica, Mich.) rounded
out the Cardinals’ double-figure scoring contingent with
a career-high 11 points on 5-9 shooting.
Ashland placed three players in
double figures in points, with Beth Everman leading the way with
game-highs of 21 points and ten rebounds. Alanna Burman added
20 points and seven more rebounds to the Eagles’ cause,
while DeAndria Bethune finished with 15 points. Everman shot 9-17
from the field, Burman went 9-16 from the field, and Bethune amassed
most of her points on 9-10 shooting from the free throw line.
The Eagles dominated the boards,
holding a 50-35 advantage over the Cardinals. Ashland also converted
on 24-29 free throw attempts, compared to only 4-7 shooting from
the line for the Cardinals. The Cardinals were also dominated
by Ashland on the fast break, as the Eagles held a 20-0 advantage.
The loss is the Cardinals fourth
straight and drops them to 1-4 (0-3 GLIAC), while Ashland moves
to 4-2 (1-0 GLIAC). SVSU returns to the court Saturday (December
7) with a 3:00p.m. game against the University of Michigan-Dearborn
in Dearborn, Mich.
