Wildcats Claw 75-62 Win Over Cardinals
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.- The Lady Cardinals
suffered a school-record seventh consecutive loss in a 75-62 defeat
at the hands of Northern Michigan, despite a valiant comeback
attempt in the second half. Northern Michigan jumped out to an
early 25-13 lead with 11:08 left to go in the first half. NMU
pushed the lead to 19 late in the first half, and carried a 42-26
advantage into halftime.
Erin Johnson's (Saginaw/Saginaw Heritage
HS) second-half heroics brought the Cardinals to within 4
points (54-50) with 9:30 remaining in the second half. Johnson
connected on four three-point shots, but the comeback fell short
as NMU pushed the lead back to nine with 8:04 left in the game.
Johnson finished with a team-high 19 points. Trisha Moody (Saginaw/Swan
Valley HS) and Jenny Brown (Evanston, Ill./Evanston
HS) each finished with 10 points for the Cardinals.
NMU was led by Marisa DellAngelo who scored
a game-high 27 points. Leigh Ann Dalton followed with 15 points,
while Dominika Wawrzyniak had a double-double recording 13 points
and 12 rebounds. The Wildcats used hot shooting from the floor
to jump out the the early lead, shooting 57% for the game, while
Saginaw Valley State shot just 39% from the field.
The Cardinals fall to 8-13 (2-11 GLIAC), while
the victory gives the Wildcats a 14-7 (9-5 GLIAC) record. The
Cardinals play host to Michigan Tech University Sat., Feb. 9,
at 1:00 p.m.
