Cards Take Second at Grand Rapids Press Tournament

Grand Rapids, Mich – Cornerstone University's Julie Vogelzang scored 32 points and Maureen O'Malley knocked down six triples to help the Golden Eagles fly past the Lady Cardinals 71-66 in the championship game of the Grand Rapids Press tournament on Saturday. O'Malley scored all 18 of her points from beyond the arc in just 19 minutes of play. Vogelzang connected on 14 of 21 shots and also tallied seven rebounds and three blocked shots.
"She's a tremendous player," Cardinal head coach Kim Chandler said of Vogelzang. "Not only did she score (32 points), but (O'Malley) got hot. They're a very solid team that was hitting on all cylinders. We couldn't turn the corner against them."
Leading scorer for SVSU was Maureen Weber (Chicago, Ill./St. Benedict's), who came off-the-bench to score 15 points in 20 minutes.  Kathryn Williams (Detroit/Martin Luther King) added 14 points and seven rebounds.
The loss is the first of the season for the Cardinals, putting their record at 3-1. The Cards will open conference play against Wayne State in Detroit on Saturday, December 1 at 1 pm.
