Cards Take Opener of Grand Rapids Press Tournament

Grand Rapids, Mich – The Saginaw Valley State Lady Cardinals were able to build a 33-20 halftime lead, and hold-off a late comeback from Aquinas College to take the opener of the Grand Rapids Press tournament 73-65 on Friday. The tournamnt includes three grand Rapids area schools: Aquinas College, Cornerstone College, C alvin College as well as SVSU. round one was played at Aquinas College, with the Cardinals getting the best of the host school.
     The Cardinals were able to use their size advantage to the tune of seven blocked shots while racking-up 15 steals on the contest.  Leading the way for SVSU was senior Kathryn Williams (Detroit/Martin Luther King), who scored 18 points and hauled down six boards. Jenny White (Oxford) and Erin Johnson (Saginaw/Heritage) each chipped-in 13 points for the Cards.
     The Cardinals, now 3-0 on the season, will move to the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids for the finals of the tournament on Saturday at 3 pm.  They will play the winner of the Cornerstone/Calvin matchup from Friday.
