Lady Cards Perfect in OT

Parkside, Wisc.- SVSU's Lady Cardinal basketball team opened its 2001-2002 season on the right note this weekend winning two overtime games in the Wisconsin-Parkside Classic.  The Cardinals combined to outscore their opponents 25-12 in the extra frame en route to their first 2-0 start since the 1998-99 season.
Game one of the Classic saw SVSU against host UW-Parkside. Tied at 55 after regulation, the teams went to the extra five minutes with Saginaw Valley dominating. SVSU allowed only three points while scoring ten en route to a 65-58 victory.
SVSU's only newcomer to the team from last year's squad, Trisha Moody (Saginaw/Swan Valley), stepped-in and made an impact right away, leading the Cardinals with 19 points.  Kathryn Williams (Detroit/Martin Luther King) had ten points for the Cards.
Day two of the Classic was SVSU versus St. Joseph's (Ind.), with the Cards taking it 83-77.  Williams led the scoring with 22 points, including a 10-11 effort from the free-throw line. Natalie Novick (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) connected on seven of her nine field goal attempts for 18 points and Erin Johnson (Saginaw/Heritage) chipped-in ten points while hauling down nine boards. The Cardinals put the game away in the overtime session, converting on all seven of their free throw attempts in overtime.
The Cardinals will travel to Grand Rapids next weekend for the Grand Rapids Press tourney on Friday and Saturday.
