Cardinals Fall Short in Comeback
UNIVERSITY CENTER, MICH- The Saginaw Valley
State Lady Cardinals almost pulled off an upset of # 23 Lake Superior
State University on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals, who trailed
at half time by 16 and as many as 21 in the second half, tied
the game with 4:23 remaining. The Lakers then pulled away down
the stretch, eventually winning 80-69.
Kathryn Williams (Detroit/Martian
Luther King HS) had 21 points, with 17 of those coming in
the second half. Williams also had six rebounds 39 minutes. Bridgett
Lamar (Ypsilanti/Ypsilanti HS) tallied 13 points and
Maureen Weber (Chicago/St. Benidict's HS) chipped-in
eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Allyson Conaway had a game high
29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lakers. The Lakers also
got contributions from Alice Duesing who had 15 points and Brooke
Henderson who came off the bench to score 12 points.
Lake Superior seemed to be in control
midway through the second half stretching its 16-point halftime
lead to 21 with 12:00 minutes left in the half. In the following
minutes, the Cardinals cut the lead to 55-47. With 4:23 left,
Angie Stewart (Perry/Perry HS) made a lay up to
tie the score at 62. Lake State then pulled out to a six-point
led with 22 seconds left. The Lakers sealed the game with free
throws down the stretch.
The Cardinals fall to 8-12 (2-10
GLIAC) and the Lakers move to 16-2 (10-2 GLIAC). They will host
Northern Michigan on Feb 7 at 5:30 pm at O'Neill Arena.
