Flaherty Resigns
Saginaw Valley
State University head women's basketball coach Lori Flaherty announced
her resignation, effective April 28, noting the death of her father
as a factor in the decision.
"In 13 years of coaching, I've never
put my family first," said Flaherty. "This was one of the most
difficult decisions I've ever had to make, but I believe it's
the right one, both for myself and my family."
Flaherty took over as the fifth
coach in the program's history and led SVSU to a 19-7 mark and
fourth place finish in the GLIAC in her first season. This past
year the Cardinals struggled through a difficult year, posting
an 8-18 mark.
"Over the past two seasons Lori
Flaherty has given her very best in coaching the SVSU women's
basketball team," said acting Athletic Director Dick Thompson.
"Her teaching of commitment to goals, the importance of integrity,
and courage under pressure, both on and off the court, was remarkable
– she will be missed."
Flaherty, who has a bachelor's degree
in physical education/health from Missouri Western State College
(1988) and a master's degree in physical education from the University
of Wisconsin, La Crosse (1992), plans to pursue her doctorate
degree.
Flaherty hopes to land a teaching
position while pursuing an advanced degree.
"We will begin the search for a
new head coach immediately," said Thompson. "We hope to have a
new coach on board by May 1."
