1999-2000 Honors Announced

The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team announced its 1999-2000 award winners at the 25th Annual Awards Banquet held April 9 in Curtiss Hall.
Senior Jill Herbig (Hamilton) took home an armload of awards, including "Most Valuable Player." The only Cardinal to start and play in all 26 games, she led the team in scoring and steals, was second in rebounds, and shot 50.5 percent from the floor. Herbig also was named the team's "Outstanding Defensive Player," and received the "Alumna Award in Honor of Beverly Sanders." Sanders was the only two-time first-team All-American in the program's history.
Earning "Most Improved Player" honors was sophomore Natalie Novick (Chicago, IL/Mother McAuley), who saw action in 18 games after playing 10 as a freshman.
Taking home the "Heart & Hustle" award was sophomore Jenny Brown (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township), who started 11 games and played in 20, despite an ankle injury that kept her on the sidelines for several contests.
The "Coach's Award" went to junior Jamie Ehle (Oscoda), who played in 23 games after transferring from Edison Community College (OH).
Along with Herbig, taking home a fourth-year letter was senior Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek), whose solid campaign was hampered by an early season broken nose. Jones started 25 games and led the team with 7.2 rebounds per game, while adding 11.7 points. She became the first Lady Cardinal in the history of the program to post a "triple double" with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over St. Joseph's College.
Second-year awards went to sophomores Tania Fliter (Griffith, IN), Bridgett Lamar (Ypsilanti), Jenny White (Oxford), Novick and Brown. Earning first-year varsity letters for the Lady Cardinals were freshman Erin Johnson (Saginaw/Heritage), Andrea Shippy (Dimondale/Holt), Angie Stewart (Perry), Maureen Weber (Chicago, IL/St. Benedict's), sophomore Stacey Premo (Saginaw/Swan Valley), and Ehle.
SVSU compiled an 8-18 overall record under second-year head coach Lori Flaherty, and finished 4-15 in the GLIAC, good for sixth place in the North Division.
