SVSU Bounces Back

GRAND RAPIDS – Saginaw Valley State University bounced back from a loss for the second time this season, beating Cornerstone University 63-56 Saturday in the consolation game of the Grand Rapids Press Tournament.
     The game was close throughout with SVSU leading 31-29 at halftime, but the Lady Cardinals trailed by as many as five points in the second half.
     "We hung together at the end to pull it out," said second-year coach Lori Flaherty, whose squad improved to 2-2.
     Senior Sue Karber (Grosse Point/North) led a balanced SVSU attack with 15 points. Sophomore Jenny White (Oxford) added 14 points and senior Jill Herbig (Hamilton) scored 10. Senior Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek) scored 13 points, led the Cards with six rebounds and dished out half a dozen assists.
     Cornerstone (4-2) was led by Laura Yonkers and Julie Vogelvang with 15 points each. Vogelvang helped the Golden Eagles to a 44-31 rebounding edge with a game-high 15 rebounds. SVSU forced 31 turnovers, however, while committing 26.
     The Cards open the GLIAC season by hosting Hillsdale College at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a double header in O'Neill Arena. The men's game will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
