Jones Triple-Double Paces SVSU Win
RENSSELAER,
IN – Senior center Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek) may have recorded
the first triple-double in school history, leading the Saginaw
Valley State University women to a 98-80 win at Saint Joseph's
College Saturday night.
Jones dished out 10 assists, grabbed
12 rebounds and scored 14 points to gain a spot on the All-Tournament
team at the GLIAC vs. Great Lakes Valley Conference Showdown.
Jones overshadowed fellow senior
Sue Karber (Grosse Point/North), who finished with 41 points –
one shy of the school record.
Sophomore Jenny White (Oxford) blistered
the nets with 6-of-10 shooting from the arc for 20 points, while
dishing out eight assists.
Senior Jill Herbig (Hamilton) also
had a solid game with 15 points, while the only points off the
bench came from freshman Erin Johnson (Saginaw/Heritage), who
chipped in 8.
"It was a total team defensive effort,"
said second-year coach Lori Flaherty, whose squad improved to
1-1. "Offensively, we made the extra pass and were patient on
the break."
The Cardinals led 51-43 at the half
and were never really threatened. They held a 45-33 rebounding
edge and dished out 35 assists as a team.
Saint Joseph's (1-1) which opened
with a win over Northwood University Friday night, had a huge
advantage at the free throw line, making 26 of 35, while SVSU
hit just 4 of 7.
The Lady Cardinals travel to the
Grand Rapids Press Tournament next weekend.
