Cardinals Fall to Grand Valley

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Saginaw Valley State University almost dug out of a 16-point hole in the second-half, but fell for the 11th straight time, 60-54 to Grand Valley State University Thursday.
     The Lady Cardinals committed a season-high 36 turnovers, including 22 in the first half, but still had a chance to pull out the win.
     After trailing 33-24 at halftime, SVSU fell behind by 16 points midway through the second half, 47-31 with 12 minutes left. But the Cards out-scored the Lakers 14-4 to cut the margin to six points, 51-45 with 6:37 left.
     Senior Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek) scored with 19 seconds left to for the games final points, but the Cardinals couldn't stop the clock and the Lakers ran out the clock.
     Senior Jill Herbig (Hamilton) led SVSU with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Jones chipped in 12 points and 8 boards.
     Amber Berndt led Grand Valley with 16 points, while Mary Randall, GVSU's all-time leading scorer, had 13 points. Becki Wheatley had 12 points.
     Grand Valley coughed up 29 turnovers, but shot 43 percent from the floor while the Cardinals hit only 37.5 percent. SVSU did own a 38-32 rebounding edge.
     The Lakers improved to 14-11 overall and 9-9 in the GLIAC North Division. SVSU dropped to 8-17 overall and 8-17 in the league.
     The Cardinals close the season Saturday by hosting Ferris State University at 1 p.m.
