White Scores 25 in Loss

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Saginaw Valley State University almost broke its school-record losing streak, but Lake Superior State University snatched the win Saturday, 62-59.
The Lady Cardinals scored just one point in the final 3:28 as the Lakers turned a three-point deficit into a three-point win.
Shannon Kulick hit back-to-back layups to put LSSU ahead 59-58 with 1:48 left, then Alice Duesing added a layup for a three point lead.
Jenny White (Oxford) split a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left for the Cardinals, but she couldn't net a game-tying triple. The Lakers missed five of their last six free throws, giving SVSU every opportunity to knot the score.
White finished with a career-high 25 points, and despite missing her last two shots, finished with 9-of-12 floor shots, including 5-of-7 from the three-point arc. She also cleared a game-high eight rebounds.
Senior Jill Herbig (Hamilton), the leading Cardinal scorer, was held to a season low five points.
SVSU started strong, leading virtually the entire first half, including a 14-point advantage, 27-13 with 3:15 left in the period. But LSSU out-scored the Cardinals 11-2 to trim the lead to 29-24 at halftime.
Four Lakers finished in double figures, led by Duesing with 15 points. LSSU had a 40-35 rebounding edge and committed 23 turnovers while forcing 32 by the Cards.
SVSU has dropped nine straight games to fall to 8-16 overall and 4-13 in the GLIAC North Division. The loss officially eliminated the Cardinals from post-season play, while the Lakers improved their chances for a berth by raising their record 14-10 overall and 8-9 in the league.
Saginaw Valley State will host Grand Valley State University next Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
