Three Double-Doubles Not Enough

RENSSELAER, IN – What a difference a year makes.
     The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team opened the season with a 72-66 loss to Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne Friday night. The Lady Cardinals thumped the Mastadons 93-59 in last year's season opener in O'Neill Arena.
     Senior Sue Karber (Grosse Point/North) posted a first-half double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, pacing an 18-7 run that put the Cardinals up by 10 late in the period.
     SVSU led by seven points, 32-25 at halftime, and had the same margin with 12 minutes left in the game, 46-39.
     The Cardinals finished with a huge 59-45 edge on the backboards, but coughed up 24 turnovers to just 10 for the ‘Dons. The perimeter game also was lopsided with SVSU making only 2-of-19 from the arc, while IPFW made 16 of 24.
     Back-to-back three pointers by Jamie Holderman and Kara Moore turned a three-point SVSU lead into a 69-66 edge for the Mastadons with 1:14 left in the game.
     The three SVSU seniors all finished with double-double performances. Karber finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Jill Herbig (Hamilton) scored 16 points and added 10 boards and Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek) scored 17 points, had 13 caroms and a team-high six assists.
     Sophomore Jenny White (Oxford) scored 15 points for SVSU.
     Holderman had 21 points and 11 rebounds for IPFW, while Moore finished with 20 points.
     SVSU will play host Saint Joseph's College Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
