Lady Cardinals Bounce Back
UNIVERSITY
CENTER – Saginaw Valley State University bounced back from a tough
loss Thursday with a 74-66 victory over Ashland University in
O'Neill Arena Saturday.
Senior Jill Herbig (Hamilton) paced
the Cardinals with 17 of her 28 game-high points in the first
half.
The Cardinals scored nine straight
points to take a 13-point lead in the first half and led by as
many as 15 points, but the Eagles scored the last eight points
of the half to trail 37-30 at intermission. SVSU failed to score
the last 3:35 of the half.
Ashland pulled within six points
early in the second half, but the Cardinals led by a dozen on
two occasions, including 64-52 with 4:30 left.
Stacy Wright spilt a pair of free
throws with 25 seconds left, but sophomore Jenny Brown (Evanston,
IL/Township) hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to ice the
win for SVSU.
Floor shooting was a key for the
Cardinals, who made 50.9 percent while the visitors hit only 35.3
percent. SVSU also made 12 of 15 free throws and Ashland hit only
16 of 25.
Senior Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek)
had another solid all-around game with 10 points, a game-high
14 rebounds, and six assists. Sophomore Jenny White (Oxford) scored
13 points and had eight rebounds. Brown finished with 12 points
after scoring just 17 points in SVSU's first 13 games.
Ashland was led by Alexandra Kouznetsova
with 17 points, while Wright had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
SVSU has won four of its last five
games to even its overall record at 7-7 and raise its GLIAC North
Division record to 3-4. The Eagles dropped to 4-10 overall and
2-5 in the South Division.
The Lady Cardinals travel to Midland
Monday to meet local rival Northwood University at 5:30 p.m.
