Lady Cardinals Win Third Straight

NEW WILMINGTON, PA – Saginaw Valley State University scored the first 24 points of the game and won their third straight, beating Westminster College a 67-53 win over Saturday in Ridl Gymnasium.
Jill Herbig (Hamilton) continues to enjoy the most productive stretch of her career, leading the women's basketball team back to the .500 mark with a 6-6 overall record and a 2-3 GLIAC North Division mark.
The senior forward posted her third consecutive double-double, finishing with a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Senior center Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek) broke out of her slump with her first double-double since opening the season with three straight. She also scored in double figures for the first time in three games, scoring 12 points and sharing game-high rebounding honors with 11.
The Titans fought back into the game, trimming the lead to 10 points late in the half, but sophomore Tania Fliter (Griffith, IN) scored her only points of the game, hitting three free throws with no time left on the clock to give SVSU a 40-27 lead at intermission.
Westminster pulled within nine points with 14:35 left in the game, 46-37, but a 14-4 Cardinal scoring run essentially put them back in control.
SVSU finished with fewer turnovers than an opponent for the first time in eight games, 19 to 23, and for just the second time this year. The Cards also dominated the backboards with a 43-31 edge.
Sophomore Jenny White (Oxford) was the only other Cardinal to score double figures with 12 points.
Four reserves scored double figures for Westminster, led by Teale Ganster with 15 points. The five Titan starters combined for just two points as they fell to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the GLIAC South.
SVSU closes its swing through the South Division with a pair of home games, hosting Wayne State University next Thursday and Ashland University on Saturday.
