Bob Sells

Sells' SVSU
Head Coaching Record

Entering his sixth season as Cardinal Head Coach, Bob Sells can still smile and claim, "I love what I'm doing." Saginaw Valley has been a challenge for Sells over the past couple years, but the Cardinals seem to back on track with a great recruiting class for 2002 and some very dedicated veterans.

"This coaching position is something that I want to succeed in, for the benefit of the athletes," states Sells. "There are some very special young ladies here (at SVSU) and they are willing to give everything they have to help turn the program around."

Six years ago, the Cardinals started a building process under Sells, which has hit some rocky roads. After winning 33 games in the first two years, the next three were more challenging for the Cardinals, but it was something that has made the athletes and coaching staff more dedicated in turning the program around.

Sells has spent his entire adult life in the sport of volleyball, starting in 1974 as a player. After years of playing/officiating, he turned to running and organizing leagues and tournaments. For 13 years, he was the Volleyball Commission for the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association, scheduling and directing the adult state championships.

Sells then became a nationally ranked official before coaching and directing clubs in Adrian and Midland, Michigan. High School coaching at Madison in Adrian and Dow High in Midland were added to his many accomplishments in volleyball.

Sells has been associated with the Mid-American Conference, the Big Ten, GLIAC, MIAA, NAIA, AAU and USAV organizations as an official, player and coach for the past 25 years.

He calls SVSU home, but resides in Midland with his wife Penny and daughters Amanda and Audra. Son BJ is a senior at EMU and daughter Maggie is law honor student at Cooley Law School in Lansing.
