Cardinals Fall to Wayne State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball fell to the visiting Wayne State Warriors by a score of 3-0 on Saturday (September 27). The warriors won by scores of 31-29, 30-20, and 30-17.
     Freshmen Aimee Bamberg (Millington, Mich.) and Julia Jezowski (Pinconning, Mich.) led the Cardinals in defeat with eleven kills and ten kills, respectively. Jezowski and freshman Rachel Pelhank (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) each recorded a team-high twelve digs, while senior Sara Lieber (Davison, Mich.) recorded nine digs. Junior Desiree Betts (Lakewood, Mich.) had a team-high 17 assists, while Lieber recorded 16 assists.
     Megan Smolen led Wayne State with a match-high 13 kills and 13 digs, while Toni Purgatori had twelve kills. Sei Hee Hwang and Breanne Detrick provided 13 digs to the Warrior cause, as well.
     SVSU falls to 1-13 (0-6 GLIAC) on the season, while the Warriors raise their record to 5-8 (1-4 GLIAC). The Cardinals return to the court on Tuesday (September 30) when they travel to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for a 7:00p.m. match.
