Timberwolves Ground Cardinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team dropped its GLIAC opener on Tuesday (September 16) to Northwood University by a score of 3-1. The Timberwolves won by scores of 30-19 in the first game, 30-20 in the second, and 30-26 in the fourth. The Cardinals won the third game by a score of 30-27.
     SVSU freshman Rachel Pelhank (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) led the Cardinals with twelve kills and nine digs on the night, while senior Sara Lieber (Davison, Mich.) racked up 24 set assists. Junior Kelly Stoltz (New Stanton, Pa.) recorded eight kills and seven digs in defeat, while junior Megan Pendleton (Belding, Mich.) and Lieber each came up with eight digs.
     Jelena Mijatovic led the Timberwolves with 21 kills, while Megan Young recorded a match-high 50 set assists. Tiffany Van Hemm led Northwood with 15 digs, while Young, Laura Zaskowski, and Mijatovic each had six digs.
     The Cardinals fall to 1-8 (0-1 GLIAC) on the season, while Northwood moves to
8-5 (1-0 GLIAC). SVSU returns to action on Friday (September 19) with their first match of the upper peninsula swing coming against Lake Superior State University. The match is set to begin at 7:00p.m.
