Cardinals
Compete at Madonna Tournament
LIVONIA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball
team competed at the Madonna University Tournament on Friday (September
5) and Saturday (September 6). The Cardinals returned home with
their first victory of the season and a record of 1-3 for the
weekend.
The first match of the weekend saw
Taylor take the set by a count of 3-1 (30-17, 30-18, 31-33, 30-22).
The Cardinals then earned their first victory of the season with
a 3-1 triumph over Huntington (30-13, 23-30, 30-18, 30-17). Olivet
Nazarene topped the Cardinals 3-0 (30-20, 30-13, 30-24), as did
Walsh (30-27, 30-18, 20-30).
Senior Sara Lieber
(Davison, Mich.) led the Cardinals in the win over Huntington,
recording 13 kills with only three errors in 23 attempts, good
for a 43% attack rate. Lieber also recorded 15 digs in the victory.
Freshman Annie Deiner (Pinconning, Mich.)
chalked up 37 assists in the win, while also providing ten digs
to the Cardinal cause.
SVSU returned from the tournament
with an overall record of 1-7. The Cardinals return to action
on Tuesday (September 16) against Northwood University. The match
will be played at SVSU in the Cardinal Gymnasium at 7:00p.m. and
will be the GLIAC opener for both schools.
