Cards Drop Tough Match to LSSU

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Lake Superior State University on Friday (October 24). The Lakers won game the first two games by scores of 30-21 and 30-22, before the Cardinals won the next two by scores of 30-22 and 30-27. The Lakers closed out with a come-from-behind 17-15 win in game number five to pull out the victory.
     Sophomore Susan Zeigler (Armada, Mich.) recorded a 41 set assists and a team-high 22 digs for the Cardinals, while senior Sara Lieber (Davison, Mich.) recorded a match-high 17 kills to go with 19 digs. Freshmen Aimee Bamberg (Millington, Mich.) and Julie Jezowski (Pinconning, Mich.) recorded 14 kills and eleven kills, respectively. Freshman Rachel Pelhank (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) contributed ten kills and 13 digs in defeat.
     Lake Superior State’s Erin Baker racked up a match-high 46 assists and contributed 16 digs in the Laker victory. Kristy James and Katy Traylor came up with 27 digs and 24 digs, respectively, to lead the Lakers. Vanessa Vincent recorded a team-high 16 kills, while Traylor added 15.
     SVSU falls to 2-20 (0-13 GLIAC) on the season, while Lake Superior State ups their record to 7-19 (4-10 GLIAC). The Cardinals return to action on Saturday (October 25) with a home match against Michigan Tech. The match is set to begin at 4:00p.m.
