Lady Cards Win One, Lose One
CHARLESTON, W Va. - Saginaw Valley State opened the Capital
Classic tournament with a 3-0 victory against the University of
Charleston on Friday (Sept. 13). The lady Cards won an easy 3-0
contest against the Golden Eagles of Charleston by the scores
of 30-17, 30-26, and 30-23. The redbirds however, lost in the
nightcap 3-0 against Indiana of Pennsylvania by the scores of
30-19, 30-16, and 30-17.
In game one of the tournament, senior
Jamie Reed (Saginaw, Mich/Heritage HS) poured in
36 assists and 6 digs. Sophomore Kelly Samalik (Freeland,
Mich.) and freshman Chelsea Erickson (Spring Lake,
Mich.) both produced 9 kills, while sophomore Ashley Howard
(Howell, Mich.) and junior Valarie Lyczkowski (Temperance,
Mich./Bedford HS) finished with eight and sevens kills respectively.
In game two, Reed dished out 13 assists
to go along with her 10 digs and five kills. Erickson finished
off 6 kills, while Samalik and Lyczkowski both finished with five.
After the day's action, the Cardinals now hold a 3-7 record on
the season.
Reed's 16 digs on the day, now gives her
a career total of 1189, just nine digs short of the schools all-time
record. Sarah Swallow, who played for the Cardinals from 1992
until 1995, currently holds the SVSU record of 1,197 digs.
The Cardinals are slated to play a 9:00
a.m. match on Saturday (Sept. 14) against Slippery Rock University
and a tournament finale at 1:00 p.m. against West Virginia Wesleyan.
