Cardinals Slip In Season Opener

Wheeling, W.Va.. – The Saginaw Valley State University lady Cardinals opened the 2002 season with a tough 3-1 loss (31-33, 30-28, 21-30, 23-30) to St. Joseph's College in their first round game of the Wheeling Jesuit tournament.
    Despite the loss senior Jamie Reed (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) led the team with 35 assist while adding 16 digs for her first double-double of the season. Junior Valarie Lyczkowski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) led the team with 12 kills, while sophomore Kelly Samalik (Freeland, Mich.) and freshman Chelsea Erickson (Spring Lake, Mich.) added nine and seven respectively. Sophomore Megan Pendleton (Belding, Mich.) also chipped in a team-high 17 digs.
    The Cardinals will play Alderson & Broaddus and the University of Indianapolis Sunday, (Sept. 1) in the final day of the tournament.
