Reed Breaks All-Time Digs Record
CHARLESTON, W Va. - Saginaw Valley State finished the Capital
Classic tournament with a 3-0 victory against the University of
Wesleyan on Saturday (Sept. 14). The lady Cards won an easy 3-0
contest against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan (30-24,
30-24, 30-18). However, SVSU dropped an earlier 3-1 contest to
Slippery Rock by the scores of 30-24, 26-30, 30-25, 30-25. The
redbirds finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Senior Jamie Reed (Saginaw,
Mich/Heritage HS) who currently has 1,225 digs, now holds
the schools all-time digs record. Reed picked up 20 digs in game
one to preserve the record and later produced another 17 digs
in game two.
Along with Reed's 20 assists in game one,
she also dished out a game-high 39 assists. Freshman Chelsea
Erickson, (Spring Lake, Mich.) slammed 14 kills and
14 digs, sophomore Kelly Stoltz (New Stanton, Penn)
had eight kills and 19 digs, and sophomore Kelly Samalik
(Freeland, Mich.) added nine kills in the Cardinal loss.
In game two the redbirds received double-doubles
from both Reed, who finished with 16 kills and 11 digs, and Stoltz
who added 16 kills and 11 digs. Erickson also contributed 12 digs
in the Cardinal victory. SVSU moves their overall record to 4-8.
Reed's 37 digs on the day, now gives her a career total of 1,225,
25 digs past the schools previous all-time record. Sarah Swallow
(1992-95) held the record with 1,197 career digs.
Reed looks to add to her record as the
Cardinals begin conference play Tuesday (Sept. 17) when visit
Northwood at 7:00 p.m.
