Cardinals Stumble In Day Two
Livonia, Mich. - In game three of the
Madonna tournament Saginaw Valley State dropped a three game match
on Saturday (Sept. 7) to Madonna University (30-22, 30-20, 30-17).
With the loss the Cardinals drop to 2- 5 on the season.
Senior Jamie Reed (Saginaw,
Mich/Heritage HS) poured in 31 assists and 19 digs. Sophomore
Kelly Samalik (Freeland, Mich.) produced 12 kills,
while junior Valarie Lyczkowski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford
HS) finished with eight.
On defense, freshman Emily Marshall
(Ypsilanti, Mich.) and freshman Susan Ziegler (Armada,
Mich.) contributed 12 and 10 digs respectively. In the end
Madonna proved to be too much for the Cardinals as the Crusaders
improve their overall record to 11-2.
In the final game of the tournament the
Cardinals fell in four games to St. Xavier University by the scores
of 19-30, 30-28, 30-24, 30-20. Despite the loss, Marshall dished
out 25 assists, while sophomore Kelly Stoltz (New Stanton,
Penn.) added 10 kills and 10 digs. Samalik once again finished
with a match-high 12 kills for the red and white.
On defense, the Cards received 26 digs
from Reed, 11 from Ziegler, and 11 from sophomore Ashley Howard
(Howell, Mich.).
Saginaw Valley State, now 2-6 will look
to improve next weekend (Sept.13-14) as they travel to Charleston,
WV to compete in their third tournament of the season.
