Cardinals Split First Two Of Madonna Tournament.
Livonia, Mich. - The lady Cardinals
split their first two games of the Madonna Tournament on Friday
(Sept. 6), moving their record to 2-4 on the season. In the first
game, the Cardinals dropped a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-20) contest
to Georgetown College, but later rallied in their second match
defeating Huntington College 3-0 (30-21, 30-20, 30-28).
Despite the 3-0 loss to Georgetown College,
senior Jamie Reed (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) led
the team with 20 assists while adding seven digs. Sophomore Kelly
Samalik (Freeland, Mich.) led the team with 8 kills,
while junior Valarie Lyczkowski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford
HS) collected four kills in the team's loss.
In the redbirds 3-0 victory over Huntington
College Reed came up with 25 digs to spark the team. Freshman
Emily Marshall (Ypsilanti, Mich.), dished out 17
assists, Samalik killed off seven, and Lisa Pfenninger
(Bay City) came up with five service aces. Lyczkowski had
a great all-around game, contributing seven kills, seven digs,
five block assists, and one solo block.
"We passed the ball around very well
in our second match, that allowed us to run our offense, said
head coach Bob Sells.
The Cardinals will play the host Madonna
on Saturday (Sept. 7) at 11:30 am. The Crusaders came into the
tournament with a perfect 8-0 record. The Cardinals will also
play a tournament finale on Saturday (Sept. 7) either at 1:00
pm or 3:30 pm.
