Cardinals Conclude Weekend Tournament
Wheeling, W.Va . - The Saginaw Valley
State University lady Cardinals earned their first victory of
the season Saturday night (Aug. 31) in a 5 game (21-30, 30-26,
30-25, 23-30, 15-13) victory over Bellarmine. The second round
victory of the Wheeling Jesuit tournament evened the Cardinals
record at 1-1.
Highlighting the redbird victory was senior
Jamie Reed (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) who guided
the team with 38 assists, while pouring in 15 digs. Freshman Chelsea
Erickson (Spring Lake, Mich.) had a team-high13 kills,
while junior Valarie Lyczkowski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford
HS) finished with ten.
The Cardinal defense was anchored by
sophomore Kelly Samalik (Freeland, Mich.), who produced13
block assists and three solo blocks and sophomore Kelly Stoltz
(New Stanton, Penn.) who added 13 digs to solidify the
teams first win of the season.
In game three of the Wheeling Jesuit tournament
Saginaw Valley State dropped a close five game match to Alderson
& Broaddus (30-24, 25-30, 27-30, 30-26, 10-15). Despite the
loss the Cardinals turned in a tough defensive performance, which
was led by another outstanding game from Reed who poured in 38
assists and 23 digs.
On defense Saginaw Valley received 18
digs from sophomore Ashley Howard (Howell, Mich.),
16 from sophomore Megan Pendleton (Belding, Mich.),
and another 15 digs fromErickson. Samalik and Lyczkowski finished
with 13 and 12 kills respectively, but it wasn't enough as the
Cardinals fell to 1-2 on the season.
In the final game of the tournament the
Cardinals fell in three games to the University of Indianapolis
by the scores of 30-17, 30-13, 30-23. The injury-hampered team
fought hard through their fourth game of the tournament but fell
short to the hungry Greyhounds of Indianapolis. The Cards drop
to 1-3 on the season, but despite the loss freshman Emily Marshall
(Ypsilanti, Mich.), dished out 17 assists, while Stoltz
added 5 kill s and 6 blocks.
"The tournament was a good experience for
our team and I am very happy with the things we discovered this
weekend," said head coach Bob Sells.
Saginaw Valley State will look to improve
next weekend (Sept.6-7) as they travel to Madonna to compete in
their second tournament of the season.
