Cardinals Split Two at Ferris State Tournament

Big Rapids, Mich. – The SVSU volleyball team split two games today at the Ferris State University Tournament in Big Rapids, Mich.. The Lady Cardinals rallied from down 0-2 to Fairmont State 3-2 (21-30, 32-34, 30-28, 30-28, 15-8) in the day's first tilt.
    The Cardinals turned in a strong team effort which saw six players record double-digit digs. Brooke Burton (Temperance/Bedford) paced the Cardinals with 22 kills and 23 digs, while freshman Megan Pendleton (Belding) chipped in 14 digs to boost the SVSU defense. Jamie Reed (Saginaw/Heritage) added 25 digs and eight kills for SVSU which improved its record to 1-2 on the season.
   "The first win is always sweet," said head coach Bob Sells. "We were a lot better today with our receive of service, and the lineup we put in there really started to click. My assistants Marc (Hoffer) and Hope (Hoffer) really deserve a lot of credit. "
  In the day's second game, SVSU fell to the University of Indianapolis3-0 (15-30, 17-30, 27-30). Reed carried the Cardinal attack, registering three service aces, nine assists, and eight digs. Ashley Howard (Howell) came off the bench in the third game of the match to add eight digs. Krista Mohr (St. Johns) led the SVSU defense with four blocks.
   "We took a small step back in the second game," said Sells. "We didn't pass well, and it really hurt us. It gives us some things to work on this week as we prepare for our tournament at Northwood."
   The Cardinals finish the tournament with a 1-3 mark. Friday (August 31) SVSU travels to Midland, Mich. to take part in the Northwood University Tournament. SVSU takes on the host Timberwolves on Friday, and then faces Dowling University and Lockhaven University on Saturday (Sept. 1).
