Cardinal Volleyball Team Falls Twice at Ferris State Tournament

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The SVSU volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday afternoon, losing 3-1 to Wisconsin-Parkside (23-30, 9-30, 31-29, 17-30) in the Ferris State University Tournament in Big Rapids, Mich.. The Cardinals were led by senior Brooke Burton (Temperance/Bedford) who finished the match with 13 kills. Jamie Reed (Saginaw/Heritage) and Krista Mohr (St. Johns) each contributed 10 digs, while Brianna White (Kalamazoo) came off the bench to add 22 assists.
Despite the setback, coach Sells saw positives in the team's first outing of the season. "It took us a while to get used to playing with each other. After we settled down in the third game, our team started to click, but it was too late."
In the nightcap, the Cardinals fell to St. Joseph (Ind.) 3-0 (25-30, 27-30, 19-30). Burton again led the Cardinals with 13 kills and 11digs. Jamie Reed and Beth Engle (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) led the Cardinal defense with 17 and eleven digs respectively, while White finished the second match with 24 digs.
"I was encouraged because we got better as the day went on," said Sells. "This is a young group and it's going to take some time for us to gel, but I liked the effort and the spirit."
The Cardinals fall to 0-2 on the season. Saturday (August 25) the Cardinals face Fairmont State at 10:00am and Indianapolis at 6:00pm during day two of the tournament.
