Cardinal Honors Announced at Banquet
UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI- The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball
team announced its 2000 award winners at a banquet held December 1 in
Curtiss Hall.
The Lady Cardinals compiled an overall record
of 9-21under fourth-year head coach Bob Sells, and finished 4-14 in the
GLIAC, good for sixth place in the North Division.
Sophomore Bree Hickman (Temperance/Bedford)
took home the "Most Valuable Player" award. Hickman played in 108 games
this season. She tallied up 442 kills, 27 service aces, 347 digs, 51 block
assists and 11 block solos. Her 442 kills places her fourth in Cardinal
history for a single season, giving her a two-year total of 810, good
for sixth all-time. Her 347 digs brought her career total to 727, placing
her 10th on the Cardinal record board. Hickman also took home "Offensive
Player of the Year" honors and earned second team GLIAC.
Earning "Most Improved" honors was sophomore
Krista Mohr (St. Johns). Mohr tallied 148 kills, 68 digs, 58 block assists
and 18 block solos for the Lady Cardinals.
"Defensive Player of the Year" honors were
shared by senior Jenni Dast (Bay City/Central) and sophomore Jamie Reed
(Saginaw/Heritage). Dast had her second consecutive season with over 300
digs, which gives her 923 for her career, fifth among Cardinal record
holders. Dast also took home the "I love to Practice" award. Reed accumulated
162 digs this season along with 12 service aces and 9 kills. Reed also
took home the "Captains Award," selected by this seasons captains.
Senior Katie Woodworth (Westphalia/Pewamo-Westphalia)
earned the "Coach's Award," given by the coaching staff to the individual
who gave entirely of herself for the sake of the program. Woodworth finished
her career with 128 block assists placing her 11th among Cardinal blockers,
and also accumulated 38 kills, 33 block assists and 5 block solos.
Seniors Dana Nelson (Adrian) and Woodworth
earned the "Cardinal Award," given to the person who truly represents
a Lady Cardinal in the volleyball program on and off the court. Nelson
had 167 kills, 33 digs, 4 service aces, 73 block assists and 27 block
solos. Nelson became the seventh Cardinal to record over 100 service aces
with 101. Her 246 career block assists moves her into the 9th position
all-time.
Senior Erin Geiger (Belding) became the
Cardinals' all-time assist leader with 3,443 assists, which broke the
record of 3,218 held by Chris Baird since 1991. Geiger also has moved
into the 10th position with135 career block assists.
Fourth-year awards were given to seniors
Dast, Geiger, Nelson and Woodworth.
Junior Beth Engle (Battle Creek/Harper Creek)
received her third-year letter.
Second-year awards went to Hickman, Mohr,
sophomore Ashley Shafer (Essexville/Garber), Reed, senior Tracy Wenzel
(Saginaw/Birch Run).
First-year awards went to freshmen Sara
Lieber (Davison), Valarie Lyczkowski (Temperance/Bedford), sophomores
Brianna White (Kalamazoo/Comstock) and Trissa Wilbert (Traverse City/West),
and junior Brooke Burton (Temperance/Bedford).
