SVSU Halts Skid With Win
SAULT STE. MARIE – The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball
team snapped a five-match losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Lake Superior
State University by game scores of 9-15, 15-13, 15-7 and 15-11 Sunday.
SVSU trailed 11-4 in the final game, then
scored the final 11 points to win the match.
"We had about 10 side outs and nipped away
a couple points at a time," said fourth-year coach Bob Sells. "We played
well defensively and had 73 digs as a team."
Sophomore Bree Hickman (Temperance/Bedford)
led the Lady Cardinals with 23 kills and 17 digs. Senior Dana Nelson (Adrian)
added 11 kills and senior Jenni Dast (Bay City/Central) posted 9 kills
and 17 digs.
Senior Erin Gieger (Belding) dished out
44 assists and sophomore Krista Mohr (St. Johns) had 7 kills, three solo
blocks and five block assists.
"(Freshman) Sara Lieber (Davison) set our
defensive pace," said Sells. "She set the tone, defensively, for us and
had 10 digs.
"We hit .231 as a team. It was one of our
best hitting performances of the year," he added, noting freshman Valarie
Lyczkowski (Temperance/Bedford) had a .700 percentage, with seven kills
in 10 attempts.
"It was a good win for us. That comeback
was very good for us."
The Cardinals improved to 1–5 in the GLIAC
North Division and are 5-12 overall, while the Lakers dropped to 6-9 overall
and 0-4 in the league. SVSU hosts Grand Valley State University Friday
at 7 p.m. and Ferris State University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
