SVSU Tests Northwood

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University put up a good fight, but couldn't knock off NCAA Division II No. 12-ranked Northwood University in the GLIAC opener for both schools Tuesday night.
     The Timberwolves won for the eighth straight time, by scores of 15-10, 15-2, 5-15 and 15-10.
     Northwood improved to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC North Division, while SVSU fell to 4-8 overall and 0-1. The Lady Cardinals put up a good fight, stealing the third game. The Timberwolves have won six matches in three straight games and have dropped only two games in their recent win streak.
     SVSU was led by sophomore Bree Hickman (Temperance/Bedford) with 15 kills and eight digs, senior Tracy Wenzel (Saginaw/Birch Run) with 12 kills and seven digs, senior Jenni Dast (Bay City/Central) with 10 digs and six kills. Senior setter Erin Geiger (Belding) had 40 assists and nine digs.
     The Timberwolves had a .260 hitting percentage, while SVSU managed only a .138 clip. The visitors also had 12 total team blocks, while the Cards had 8.
     SVSU takes to the road this weekend for matches at the University of Findlay on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Ashland University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
