Cardinals Break Into Win Column

ALLENDALE -- The Saginaw Valley State University finally got into the win column with a come-from-behind win over Mankato State University (MN) at the Amerihost Classic Tournament at Grand Valley State University Friday.
     The Lady Cardinals pulled out a five-game victory by scores of 15-11, 6-15, 6-15, 15-11 and 15-11 for their first victory of the season.
     "We worked on chemistry all day," said Coach Bob Sells, "and we definitely had it tonight. They were excited and it was a good win. "
     SVSU trailed two games to one and was behind 9-4 in the fourth game before coming back to win. Sophomore Krista Mohr (St. Johns) had a block for the final point and the victory and finished with six total blocks and nine kills.
     Sophomore outside hitter Bree Hickman (Temperance/Bedford) had a huge night, leading SVSU with 21 kills, 21 digs and four service aces. Senior Katie Woodworth (Westphalia/Pewamo-Westphalia) had a .384 hitting percentage as SVSU hit .321 for the match.
     Redshirted freshman Brianna White (Kalamazoo/Comstock) had 46 assists, while sophomore Jamie Reed (Saginaw/Heritage) and freshman Sara Lieber (Davison) had 18 and 12 digs, respectively. Senior Tracy Wenzel (Saginaw/Birch Run) added 10 kills.
     Armstrong Atlantic State University (GA) kept winless earlier in the day by winning in three straight games by scores of 15-6, 15-10 and 15-9.
     Hickman led SVSU with 12 kills and six digs, while senior setter Erin Geiger (Belding) had 26 assists. Senior Jenni Dast (Bay City/Central) had five digs, and Reed had six, while Wenzel had eight kills.
     The Lady Cardinals are 1-5 overall and play Bryant College (RI) at 10 a.m. Saturday.
