Lady Cardinals Open With Losses

BIG RAPIDS- The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team opened its season with a pair of losses at the Ferris State University Invitational Friday.
SVSU won the first game 15-11 against Quincy University (IL), then dropped three straight by scores of 13-15, 12-15 and 8-15.
"I can't be totally unhappy, because we put a lot of new stuff in," said fourth-year head coach Bob Sells. "It didn't help having some key players out with injuries. It was a match we should have won."
SVSU fell behind 7-0 in the decisive fourth game, came back to lead 8-7 then watched the Hawks score the final eight points for the win.
Sophomore outside hitter Bree Hickman (Temperance/Bedford) led SVSU with 13 kills, while senior setter Erin Geiger (Belding) had 33 assists, senior Jenni Dast (Bay City/Central) had 12 digs and sophomore Krista Mohr (St. Johns) had four solo blocks.
"If we would have maintained quick offense we established in first game, we could have beaten them," said Sells.
GLIAC foe Lake Superior State University handed SVSU a 15-5, 15-10 and 15-4 defeat.
"I liked the floor leadership of Jenni Dast." said Sells. "She was the only starter I left on the floor for the third game."
Dast had six kills and 15 digs, while Hickman had 12 kills and Geiger had 19 assists.
"Krista Mohr had another good game at the net with seven kills and four blocks," said Sells.
SVSU plays two matches Saturday to wrap up the tournament.
