Cardinals Push Ferris

BIG RAPIDS – Saginaw Valley State University knocked off Ferris State University earlier this season, but couldn't complete a sweep, falling in four games to the Bulldogs Friday evening by scores of 12-15, 15-5, 15-12 and 15-9.
With the match tied at one game apiece and 12-12 in the third frame, SVSU Coach Bob Sells called a timeout. Ferris scored the next three points to win the game and eventually the match.
"I thought we had the match right there," said Sells. "It was a very well played match. We just didn't create the breaks or generate offense when we need to."
Sophomore Bree Hickman (Temperance/Bedford) led SVSU with 15 kills and 12 digs. Senior Jenni Dast (Bay City/Central) had nine digs, senior Katie Woodworth (Westphalia/Pewamo-Westphalia) added 11 kills, and sophomore Ashley Schafer (Essexville/Garber) had three block assists. Senior Erin Geiger (Belding) had 40 assists.
The Cardinals dropped their third straight match to fall to 9-20 overall and are 4-13 in the GLIAC North Division, while Ferris is 21-7 overall and 11-6 in the league. SVSU closes the season Saturday at No. 16-ranked Grand Valley State University at 4 p.m.
