Nelson Sparks SVSU Win
ADRIAN – Saginaw Valley State University pulled out a 3-2 victory at
Siena Heights University Sunday, winning the two-and-a-half hour match
by scores of 8-15, 15-13, 14-16, 16-14 and 15-13.
Playing in front of hometown fans and against
her high school best friend (setter Cazzie Steudle), senior Dana Nelson
(Adrian) had the winning kill for the Lady Cardinals.
"It was well played, ugly played and had
a little of everything," said SVSU Coach Bob Sells. "The girls didn't
give up."
Nelson finished with nine kills, two solo
blocks and six block assists for the Cards, 2.5 hours, well played, ugly

Sophomore Bree Hickman (Temperance/Bedford)
led SVSU with 22 kills and added 15 digs. Senior Jenni Dast (Bay City/Central)
had three aces and shared team-high dig honors with sophomore Jamie Reed
(Saginaw/Heritage) at 22 each. Junior Beth Engle (Battle Creek/Harper
Creek) had 18 digs.
"Beth had a big match for us, defensively,"
said Sells.
Senior Tracy Wenzel (Saginaw/Birch Run)
had nine kills, sophomore Krista Mohr (St. Johns) had 10 kills and five
block assists.
Senior Erin Geiger (Belding) had 41 assists,
while freshman Brianna White (Kalamazoo/Comstock) had 25 assists for SVSU.
The Cardinals improve to 8-17 overall, while
the Saints fell to 23-10. SVSU hosts three straight matches next weekend,
beginning with Lake Superior State University on Friday at 6 p.m.
