RAY NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-REGION

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Junior pitcher Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) has been named Second Team All-Great Lakes Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Ray was the number one starter for the Cardinals and led the team with a 1.39 ERA in 135.2 innings. (More)

ALBERT NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-GLIAC

BAY CITY, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced the 2005 All-GLIAC Softball Teams today and Saginaw Valley State was well represented with four student-athletes making the list. The Cardinals had one player named to the First Team All-GLIAC list in senior second baseman Katie Albert (Waterford, Mich./Kettering). Albert was third on the team with a .289 batting average and started in all 40 games this season. (More)

CARDS DROP TWO OF THREE AT GLIAC TOURNAMENT

MIDLAND, Mich. - The 2005 GLIAC Tournament proved to be a series of ups and downs for the Cardinals as they finished with a 1-2 record on Friday and were eliminated from the tournament. Saginaw Valley State entered the tournament as the seventh seed and gave second-seeded Ferris State a battle before losing 5-4 in 10 innings in their first game of the day. Junior Jamie Seaman was 3-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI against the Bulldogs. (Recap)

CARDS DROP TWO AT AQUINAS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State softball squad finished their regular season by dropping two non-conference games at Aquinas College on Wednesday. The Cardinals were defeated 4-0 in game one and 8-1 in game two. Junior Jamie Seaman (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) collected two hits in game one and drove in the only run in game two. (Game 1 , Game 2)

CARDS SPLIT WITH MERCYHURST AND EARN SIXTH SEED IN GLIAC TOURNAMENT

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State softball team overcame an 11-0 game one loss to salvage a split with Mercyhurst on Sunday winning game two by the final score of 4-1. The Cardinals needed the win in game two as they cemented a spot in the GLIAC Tournament next Friday and Saturday at Emerson Park in Midland. The Cardinals will be the sixth-seed and face third-seeded Ferris State on Friday, May 6 at 9:00 am. SVSU scored two runs in the first and second innings in game two and held on for a 4-1 win. Lorelea Rice (Caledon East, Ont.) went the distance and allowed four hits and struck out six. (Recap)

SEAMAN'S HOMER HELPS SVSU SPLIT AT LAKE STATE

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Junior Jamie Seaman (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) hit a walk-off homer in game two to give SVSU a split at Lake Superior State on Friday. The Cards were shutout 2-0 in game one and trailed by a run going into the eighth inning in game two before Seaman's heroics. (Game 1, Game 2)

RICE THROWS A SHUTOUT IN GAME ONE AS CARDS SPLIT WITH WAYNE STATE

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Sophomore Lorelea Rice (Caledon East, Ont.) pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout in a 3-0 game one win on Sunday against Wayne State and the Warriors took advantage of poor fielding by the Cardinals to win game two, 11-2, in six innings. Rice improved to 8-3 with another solid performance walking none and striking out six Warriors. (Recap)

CARDS SWEEP LEAGUE LEADING CHARGERS

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Cardinal pitching was on and the Hillsdale Chargers were the victims as SVSU swept a doubleheader from the league leaders on Friday from the SVSU Softball Field. The Chargers entered the day at 6-2 and tied with Northwood for the GLIAC lead. The Cardinals are now even with the Chargers at 6-4 in the conference after a big two-game performance. Junior Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) struck out a season-high 14 batters in a game two win. (Recap)

Lady Cards Back to .500 With GLIAC Sweep at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State softball team used strong pitching and defense in a critical sweep at Findlay on Sunday, evening their GLIAC record at 4-4 and pushing their overall mark to 13-12. Sophomore Lorelea Rice (East Caledon, Ont./Mayfield Secondary) improved to 6-3 in the circle with a complete game, five-hit shutout in game one as SVSU claimed a 3-0 victory. Rice struck out seven Oilers and allowed no extra base hits. Senior Katie Albert (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) collected four hits on the day including a 3-for-4 performance in game one. (Recap)

SVSU Drops a Pair at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio - SVSU battled for a total of 20 innings on Saturday at Ashland and fell to 11-12 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC with a 4-3 loss and 3-1 loss to the Eagles. The first game was a marathon as the Eagles won it in the bottom of the 13th inning. Lorelea Rice (East Caledon, Ont.) hauled a majority of the innings going 9.2 and allowed two unearned runs in the fourth and tenth innings. She struck out six and walked two and gave way to Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) who picked up the loss (5-6) going the final 2.2 innings and allowed two unearned runs in the eleventh and thirteenth innings. Cards Earn Split at Madonna

LIVONIA, Mich. - The theme of April continues to be split as the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals did so for the third straight time this month, this time against the Madonna Crusaders. SVSU dropped a 3-2 decision in 10 innings in game one despite a two-hit performance from junior Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton). Sophomore Denise Betts (Harbor Springs, Mich.) went 1-for-1 with two walks and three RBI in a 6-2 game two win for the Cards. (Recap)

Ray Throws Shutout as SVSU Splits at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State women's softball squad got a big pitching performance from junior Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) in a game one win and also saw a big hitting performance by Emily McLean of the Bulldogs in a GLIAC split on Sunday. SVSU claimed a 2-0 win in the first game behind Ray who tossed a complete game five-hit shutout. She had good control of the strike zone all day as she struck out 11 and issued no walks. (Recap)

Cards Split GLIAC Opener at Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The outcome of Friday's GLIAC opening twinbill against Grand Valley State came down to each team scoring in their final at-bats as SVSU and GVSU split a pair of 1-0 games. Senior outfielder Emily Byram (Grand Rapids, Mich./Allendale) returned home to score the game-winning run in game two after ripping a single to open the eighth inning. Cards Split on Day Two at Lewis Invitational

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lady Cardinals split a pair of games on the second day of the Lewis University Invitational dropping a non-conference 4-3 decision to Ferris State and claiming a 3-1 win over St. Francis (IL). Tabitha Greenwood (Vassar, Mich.) went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored in the first game and hit her third homer of the season in the second game. (Recap)

SVSU Falls 2-1 in 10 Innings at Florida Gulf Coast

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision in 10 innings on Thursday night from Florida Gulf Coast University. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but weather permitted the cancellation of the second game in the second inning. Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) pitched the entire game and struck out 11 in a losing effort dropping the team to 3-4 overall. (Recap)

Cardinals Battle #1 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped a pair of games to Florida Southern, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II. With the outcome, SVSU drops to 3-3 on the season. The Cardinals managed only four hits in the first game, led by Lorelea Rice (Caledon East, Ontario/Mayfield Secondary), who went 2-for-3 with two singles. (Recap)
