RICE
THROWS A SHUTOUT IN GAME ONE AS CARDS SPLIT WITH WAYNE STATE
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Sophomore Lorelea
Rice (Caledon East, Ont.) pitched a complete
game, four-hit shutout in a 3-0 game one win on Sunday against
Wayne State and the Warriors took advantage of poor fielding
by the Cardinals to win game two, 11-2, in six innings. Rice
improved to 8-3 with another solid performance walking none
and striking out six Warriors. Junior first baseman Tabitha
Greenwood (Vassar, Mich.) smacked her fourth
homer of the season, a solo round-tripper, in the two-run
first inning in game one for SVSU. Earlier in the inning,
Rice helped herself with an RBI single scoring leadoff hitter
Monica Sims (Millbury, Ohio) to
give SVSU a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals sent one run home in the
bottom of the fourth as senior Emily Byram
(Grand Rapids, Mich./Allendale) singled to center
which scored pinch runner Lindsay Ferrari
(Macomb, Mich.). Seven different players had a base
hit in game one and Jamie Seaman (St.
Clair Shores, Mich.) went 1-for-1 with two walks.
The Warriors scored two runs
in the fifth and then scored eight more in the sixth inning
on six Cardinal errors. Rice was 2-for-3 with her eighth double
in game two. Shortstop Sara Seronko (Gladstone,
Mich.) was 2-for-2 with her first double and also scored
a run. Greenwood was 1-for-3 with her fourth double. Starter
Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton)
surrendered three earned runs in 5.2 innings and struck out
seven batters. Meghan Misiak got the win for Wayne State recording
seven strikeouts and allowing one earned run.
