Cardinals
Fly By Loras, 8-1
FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University
softball team emerged victorious from a battle with Loras
College on Tuesday (March 1). The Cardinals triumphed by a
score of 8-1. SVSU fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but
scored four runs in the third inning and two runs in both
the fourth and fifth innings.
Junior Karen Ray (Fenton,
Mich./Lake Fenton) earned the win, pitching four innings
and allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out
three batters. Sophomore Lorelea Rice (Caledon
East, Ontario/Mayfield Secondary) pitched two innings,
striking out two and allowing one hit and one walk. Freshman
Holly Bruntjens (Gladstone, Mich.)
pitched the seventh inning, striking out two batters.
Offensively the Cardinals were
led by junior Monica Sims (Millbury,
Ohio), who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two
RBI. Rice went 2-for-4 with a double, while senior Katie
Albert (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) went
2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Junior Tabitha
Greenwood (Vassar, Mich.) went 2-for-3 with
a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Denise
Betts (Harbor Springs, Mich.) also went
2-for-3, scoring one run and knocking one in. Senior Emily
Byram (Grand Rapids, Mich.) went 2-for-3
with a triple, two runs scored and one RBI.
The Cardinals' record improves
to 3-1 on the young season, while Karen Ray pushes her record
to 2-0.
