CARDS SWEEP LEAGUE LEADING CHARGERS

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Cardinal pitching was on and the Hillsdale Chargers were the victims as SVSU swept a doubleheader from the league leaders on Friday from the SVSU Softball Field. The Chargers entered the day at 6-2 and tied with Northwood for the GLIAC lead. The Cardinals are now even with the Chargers at 6-4 in the conference after a big two-game performance.
Sophomore Lorelea Rice (Caledon East, Ont.) threw a complete game and allowed three hits in a 3-1 game one win. Rice improved to 7-3 and allowed an unearned run in the fourth inning. Senior Katie Albert (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) had a big day offensively going a combined 4-for-7 with two runs. Albert scored both of her runs in game one as she scored on a wild pitch in the two-run first inning for the Cards. Rice scored later in the inning on a delayed steal to make it 2-0. Junior Tabitha Greenwood (Vassar, Mich.) drove in Albert in the fifth inning with a single to center field which added an insurance run. SVSU pounded out nine hits against starter Aimee Genter (7-6) as Greenwood was 2-for-2 with a walk.
SVSU won 2-1 in the nightcap as Karen Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) struck out a season-high 14 Chargers and allowed two hits with no earned runs. The big hit in game two came from freshman Holly Bruntjens (Gladstone, Mich.) who hit a pinch-hit double to the left field wall which moved Emily Byram (Grand Rapids, Mich./Allendale) to third base with one out. Monica Sims (Millbury, Ohio) broke a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly to center which scored Byram with the winning run. Ray struck out the side in the seventh to preserve the win. Stephanie Sills (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the fourth inning.
Saginaw Valley (15-12, 6-4 GLIAC) will host Wayne State on Sunday, April 17 at 1:00 pm in another GLIAC matchup.
