February 27, 2005 CARDS POST 1-0 WIN OVER MERCYHURST FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State softball
squad opened the 2005 season with a 1-0 shutout of Mercyhurst
on Saturday from the Lee County Sports Complex. In a non-GLIAC
game to open their spring trip, the Cardinals got a strong
performance from junior Karen Ray (Fenton,
Mich./Lake Fenton) on the mound. She went the distance
of seven innings and allowed two hits with eight strikeouts.
Offensively, junior Monica Sims (Millbury,
Ohio) went 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI in the fifth
inning. Senior Emily Byrum (Grand Rapids,
Mich.) walked in the fifth and then stole second before
coming home on the Sims' single. Sophomore Lorelea
Rice (East Caledon, Ont.) went 2-for-3 at
