ALBERT
NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-GLIAC
BAY CITY, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced the 2005 All-GLIAC Softball
Teams today and Saginaw Valley State was well represented
with four student-athletes making the list. The Cardinals
had one player named to the First Team All-GLIAC list in senior
second baseman Katie Albert (Waterford,
Mich./Kettering). Albert was third on the team with a
.289 batting average and started in all 40 games this season.
She led the squad with 20 runs scored and also led the team
with 16 RBI. In addition, Albert led the team with 37 hits
and ranked second on the team with six doubles and 12 walks.
She batted .322 in GLIAC games for SVSU and had a .958 fielding
percentage with 100 putouts.
Sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Lorelea Rice (Caledon East, Ont./Mayfield
Secondary) was named Second Team All-GLIAC as a utility
player. Rice did it all for the Cards in 2005 as she ended
the season with a .298 batting average which was tops on the
team. She also posted a 9-7 record on the mound with a 1.66
ERA in 105.1 innings. She threw eight complete games and three
shutouts this season and struck out 75 hitters. Offensively,
she drove in 15 runs and tied for the team lead with eight
doubles.
SVSU had two players receive
Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors as junior pitcher Karen
Ray (Fenton, Mich./Lake Fenton) and junior
third baseman Denise Betts (Harbor Springs,
Mich.) round out the quartet. Ray led the team with 10
wins on the mound and led the team with a 1.39 ERA in 135.2
innings. Ray struck out 154 batters and walked 18 as opponents
hit .213 against her during the season. Karen made 23 appearances
and threw three shutouts in 2005. Betts hit .286 and started
all 40 games at the hot corner. She scored 10 runs and collected
four doubles and seven RBI in 119 at-bats. Denise had a .341
on-base average and stole three bases in five tries.
