Feb. 27, 2001

FT. MYERS, FL – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team fell to Wartburg College, IA, on Tuesday afternoon by the score of 8-3. Freshman Courtney Pintek (Flushing) took the loss for SVSU, relieving fellow freshman Christina Fuciarelli (Washington/Harper Woods Regina) in the third inning. "Pintek pitched well enough to win in relief," said Neering, whose Cardinals had built a 3-2 seventh-inning lead. Wartburg scord two runs in the third inning. SVSU scored their first run in the fourth inning on a single by junior Whitney Babcock (Bay City/All Saints). Senior Jocelyn Gubancsik (Burton/Flint Kearsley) had an RBI single, while junior Brandi Srda (Clio), who went 2-for-4, had a double. Freshman Jesse Kaniszewski (Kingston) singled and then scored later in the fifth on a passed ball. Senior Tiffany Martin (Flushing) hit a solo homer to give SVSU the lead in the sixth. Wartburg had three hits in the seventh inning, while SVSU had four errors, which accounted for Wartburg's six runs. "We had a complete breakdown in communication and concentration," commented Neering. SVSU is 3-4 overall and takes Wednesday off before meeting Alma College at 11 a.m. and Adrian College at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
