SVSU Softball
Sweeps Mercyhurst
UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI- The Saginaw Valley State University
women's softball team defeated the Lakers of Mercyhurst College
in both games of the double header on Friday afternoon
SVSU took the first game by the score of 6-0
Junior pitcher Caarrie Shay (Flint/Burton Bendle)
got the win for the Lady Cardinals. Shay gave up nine hits,
walked only one and struck out five. Shay improves her season
record to 3-9.
SVSU did not get going on their scoring streak
until the fourth inning. Bringing in the first Lady Cardinal
run was junior Brandi Srda (Clio) on a single to center field.
Sophomore Diana Balbough (Chesaning) brought in Srda for the
Lady Cardinals number two run, when she singled in the fourth
inning. SVSU scored oncew in the fifth inning and three times
in the sixth, leaving the Lakers scoreless.
Junior April Vega (Essexville/Garber) also had
a good game for the Lady Cardinals. Vega chipped in two runs
on two hits at four trips to the plate.
The Lady Cardinals also took the second game by
the score of 1-0.
Freshman right hander Courtney Pintek (Flushing)
was handed the win for the Lady Cardinals. Pintek allowed five
hits, walked one and struck out four. Pintek's record improves
to 7-3 on the season.
The Lady Cardinals scored their only run in the
first inning. Srda had a bunt single, which brought home freshman
Jesse Kaniszewski (Kingston) for the game winning run. Also
having a good game for SVSU was senior Tiffany Martin (Flushing)
who contributed two hits at three trips to the plate.
SVSU improves their record to 14-22 overall and
6-8 in the GLIAC.
The Lady Cardinals next game will be on Saturday,
April 28th when they will host Wayne State University in a double
header. Game time is 1:00pm.
