Cardinals take
one of two at Madonna
LIVONIA, MI- The Saginaw Valley State University
women's softball team split with the Crusaders of Madonna University
on Thursday afternoon.
SVSU took the first game by the score of 7-1.
Freshman pitcher Christina Fuciarelli (Washington/Harper
Woods Regina) got the win for the Lady Cardinals. Fuciarelli
gave up four hits while her season record improves to 3-5.
SVSU started the game out strong getting four
runs in the first inning against Madonna's one run.
Leading the way for the Lady Cardinals was sophomore
Kelly Martin (Bay City/All Saints) with a double along with
two RBI's for SVSU. Senior Tiffany Martin (Flushing) chipped
in two runs on two hits at four trips to the plate, while junior
April Vega (Essexville/Garber) added a triple for the Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Cardinals lost the second game by the
score of 2-4.
Senior outfielder Libby Poellet (Frankenmuth)
took the loss for SVSU. Poellet allowed nine hits, walked two
and struck out five in her season debut as Cardinal pitcher.
The Lady Cardinals were leading the Crusaders
up until the fourth inning when Madonna scored four runs, putting
them ahead 2-4.
Junior Brandi Srda (Clio) brought in the first
SVSU run when she hit a sacrifice fly out to right field in
the second inning. Fuciarelli brought in the second Lady Cardinal
run off a single to center field.
SVSU's record is now 18-25-1 overall and 9-10
in the GLIAC.
The Lady Cardinals next game will be on Friday,
May 4th when they will compete in the GLIAC tournament.
