SVSU Splits with Lake Superior

UNIVERSITY CENTER-The Saginaw Valley State University softball
team split a two game contest against Lake Superior State University
today. Jean Pergande of LSSU got the win over SVSU in the first
game, allowing only five Cardinals to reach base. Pergande struck
out 4, improving to 5-3. LSSU scored all five of their runs in
the fourth and fifth innings. Whitney Babcock (Bay City All
Saints) and Libby Poellet (Frankenmuth) both collected
two hits in the game. Junior Carrie Shay (Flint/Burton Bendle)
took the loss, dropping to 1-5 on the season. She allowed 9 hits,
while striking out two. In the second game SVSU exploded. Freshman
Christina Fuciarelli (Washington/Harper Woods Regina) blanked
LSSU and hurled a one hitter for the Cardinals in way to a 10-0
win. The majority of SVSU's runs came in the fourth inning when
Babcock led off with a homer. The Cardinals went on to collect
6 more runs in that inning and put the game out of reach. Freshman
Fuciarelli allowed only one hit in five innings in getting her
first win of the season and improve her record to 1-2. Jennifer
Corbin, winless this season picked up her fifth loss. Jesse
Kaniszewski (Kingston), Babcock, Leya Taylor (Saginaw/Michigan
Lutheran Seminary), and Kelly Martin (Bay City/All Saints)
all collected two hits for the Cardinals.
Saginaw Valley is currently 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC,
while LSSU brings its record to 5-13 overall and also 1-1 in the
GLIAC.
The Cardinals next game will be against Grand Valley State University
at home on Tuesday. Game time is slated for 4:00pm.
